CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the Girls Basketball teams. The Varsity team placed 2nd in the League and took 1st place in the SJCAL Gold Tournament!
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Our Athletic Dept. is in need of
support from our school community. We have a complete list of equipment and
supplies needed in order to continue to run a successful program.
We would like to acquire these items via donation of cash, SCRIP, or
the equipment itself.
We want to run an effective sports
program and allow our children to experience the winning feeling that
comes from being part of a team. We hope to offer this program to
compliment the academic success we have already found at Saint Cyprian.
Would you please consider showing your
support of our kids? Staff, parents, & most importantly our kids
appreciate your generosity! Please contact Mr. Rodriguez, Athletic
Director, (spartanathletics@comcast.net)
with questions or to coordinate a donation.
Thanks... from your Spartan Boosters

SAN JOSE CATHOLIC ATHLETIC LEAGUE
St. Cyprian Athletics is divided into boys sports and
girls
sports. Teams are not co-ed.
St. Cyprian Athletics is currently in the San Jose Catholic Athletic
League (SJCAL). This organization is made up of all the Athletic
Directors (A.D.) from the schools within our league. The A.D.s
meet monthly to conduct the leagues business, organize games,
tournaments, and finances to help make all athletic programs productive
for the school and athletes.
The SJCAL is made from the following schools: Resurrection, St.
Cyprian, St. Joseph (Cupertino), St. Joseph (Atherton), St. Martin
(Sunnyvale), St. Simon, St. Nicholas, Pinewood, Keys, St. Joseph (Mt.
View), Castelleja, Menlo School.
The SJCAL follows general high school sports rules for each
sport. Since our league consists of athletes 8th grade and
younger, the league has a set of rules that is adapted to each sport
and the appropriate age bracket. A set of the “adapted” rules
will be given to the coaches when practices begin so that they may
properly prepare their teams before their first game.
Among these rules are the guidelines for the team brackets at which an
athlete may participate in sports. This plays a major role in how
our school, as well as the rest of the league, forms their teams.
Jr. Varsity “C” or JVC
=
4th graders ONLY
Jr. Varsity “B” or JVB
=
5th graders
Jr. Varsity “A” or JVA
=
6th graders
Varsity B or
VB
=
7th graders
Varsity A or
VA
=
8th graders
The brackets are designed to help all schools participating to be
competitive by playing the same grade/age children against each
other. The brackets are simply guidelines for the league to form
teams. Individual players can always play up in a bracket but
rarely move down in the bracket.
For example a 6th grader can play on a varsity team but
a 7th or 8th
grader cannot play on ANY JV team. A 4th grader can play on a JVA
or JVB team, but only 4th graders can play on the JVC team.
Following this bracket system helps keep teams competitive with each
other so older athletes are not playing against much younger
athletes. The bracket system will vary along with the placement
of individual athletes due to class size and the number of male/female
athletes in each class.
PHILOSOPHY & GOALS OF THE
SPARTAN ATHLETIC PROGRAM
Athletics has long been an accepted value of Catholic
School
education. Spartan Athletics strives to develop athletes in a
manner that will improve each individual athlete’s growth of spirit,
intellect, emotional, social and physical attributes.
Academically St. Cyprian prepares your child for jr. high and high
school. Our athletic program will be an important part of your child’s
educational process as we prepare them for jr. high and high school
sports.
The success of any athletic program is dependent on the constant
support of the administrators, teachers, coaches, parents, spectators
and the student athletes.
The goals of the athletic program are:
-
At the JV level we teach the athletes game
fundamentals, sportsmanship, teamwork and try to create a passion for
sports. At the Varsity level we teach the technical and strategic
part of sports. Although winning is a part of our goal at this
level, it is not “the” goal.
